Actually, the HT-40 was available as a kit, it was marketed as the HT-40K. I don't recall the panel being marked HT-40K though, I seem to recall (poor memory) that the only designation of it being an HT-40K  kit was on the serial number tag that was applied during construction.

Hallicrafters did make a few other kits as well, the SX-140K and SX-119K receivers as well as some test equipment to name a few.
