The low voltage choke in my Ranger died but I did locate a suitable
replacement ( a UTC R-19) which looks like it should work. There was no
reason for the failure that I can see, apart from possible heat fatigue, but
before I install a replacement does anyone know the approximate current draw
for the low voltage section of a Ranger? I measure 93 ma on CW on my
transmitter with no choke installed....seems a little high to me for the
tube configuration. I would have expected more like 50-60 ma.
Anyone know where Johnson sourced its components? The UTC R-19 choke
looks like a dead ringer for the Johnson part. It is rated at 100 ma, 14H,
450 ohms, size is exact, and apart from lighter insulation on the leads it
looks like an exact replacement. I know Hammond under-rates its
components by as much as 50% in some cases-anyone know if UTC did the same
in "the old days"? Assuming the current draw I measure is close to normal,
I would consider installing a choke rated at 100 ma if I was pretty sure it
was underrated. I have no idea what the original Johnson part was rated
for.
