I bought a bag of lollypops for a $1, from local food store, and now have
a lifetime supply of pointers.

I used pieces of dowel rod painted to match; I bought a length at Menards
which was plenty to replace missing pointers on my 500, T-bolt, and 6N2. 
Others have suggested the sticks from "cotton tips".  I am sure there are
other suggestions forthcoming.
