Excellent, thank you Dennis. Several posters had, I believe, parts of
this explanation
correct (most of the best postings unfortunately were off-list), but
this lucid and
complete writeup deserves to be framed and kept on my desk :).

Part of the reason why I started to ponder the reason for plate dip is
that a recent
homebrew attempt showed little or no plate current dip. I am fairly
certain that this
is a result of poor screening giving rise to coupling between the plate and grid
circuits of the output stage. There is little point trying to
neutralize a stage if the
magnitude of the coupling due to poor layout/screening is larger than the amount
that the neutralization could correct for [OK, that's a poorly
constructed sentence].
