Yes, heard of that.  When a carbon mic starts exhibiting polarity,  
though, it's probably getting close to the end of it's useful life.

What I do with dead T-17s these days is substitute in an electret  
element with a single transistor circuit that works as a direct  
replacement for the carbon element, i.e., no changes to the  
transmitter/speech amp's bias and input circuit.  Works great but is  
polarity conscious of course.
