I got the following from my neighbor KE5KR who is pretty much an
expert on older cars.  He has a beautiful 1953 Ford he restored.

I was pretty sure that my 1950 Ford convertible was 6 Volt/pos gnd,
but I wanted confirmation before commenting.

Ford was 6 volt, pos ground to 1955.
 
All Fords from 1956 and later were 12 volt, neg ground
 
Chev went to 12 volt in 1955.
