[Boatanchors] Cleaning Air Variables

I recently aquired a very nice Millen variable cap for use in a project. It's very nice in all respects excepting that there's a whitish deposit on most of the plates that resists my usual cleaning methods.

Over the years I've heard of soaking dirty caps in a mild acid, such as tomatoe juice, lemon juice or commercial acidic cleaners.

The plates on this cap are thick and polished. I'd hate to ruin the polish by cleaning, but perhaps the deposit has already ruined the polish.

Any good ideas out there so I can bolt this cap down?
