Barrie, was not trying to start a fight with that crack about the light
bulb. A light bulb may have been what you used back in the 50's. but it
was a poor dummy load then and is still now. I guess I mean a real dummy
load, you know the type can handle a Kw for an hour at 50 Ohms. even
measure a light bulb? they are not 50 Ohms, or even a Heathkit cantenna.
The reason you were getting 120 watts was because of the light bulb. A
really 50 Ohm dummy load would have shown you the true output of the
FT101 to be about 100 watts. Not to mention that a light bulb will
radiate a signal for a long ways, and cause QRM on the frequency and
dummy load won't.
I wasn't using a light bulb, honest!
Someone else said "light bulb". Granted, I did respond to that post, and I did ask "what's wrong with a light bulb" ( in, I thought, a humorous fashion).
I was using a real, high-quality dummy load that just happens to be rated at 60 watts. I've exceeded that rating for a few seconds many times, with no apparent bad results.
Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone for the comments and suggestions. All very enlightening and entertaining!
