The FT-101E will do the driver/VFO duties *IF* you convert the final PAs 
to 6146s

That is a well documented conversion that works VERY well.  I did an 
FT-101B over 8 years ago, and still run the same 6146s - AND - get a lot 
less heat issues.

The FT-101EE and the FT-101EX models were directed (REALLY) at the 11 
mtr crowd.

The E and earlier models were better made.
