Actually, this bill could still be a problem. These questions need to
be asked and answered before the bill becomes law, if it does:
(1) How will amateur radio and other equipment that includes coverage of
any of the "standard broadcast" bands (AM or FM) as an incidental part
of the design be affected - this goes the the "general coverage"
capabilities of many modern HF and VHF transceivers, and most "scanners".
(2) What about inexpensive (less than $15.00 retail) AM and FM sets -
will the additions required to receive satellite and / or digital
transmissions make them uneconomical to market?
(3) what about "toy" radios (i.e. crystal sets) sold to youngsters as
educational kits ?
(4) What about aircraft ADF sets - are these still used?
(5) same for marine ADF or DF receivers
(6) how about units where radio reception is not the primary function,.
but is included as a secondary function, such as cassette tape players
and CD players? What about clock radios, and coffee pots that include
a radio, or a weather alert receiver that includes an AM radio, or an
emergency radio/flashlight combo - what is the primary function and
what are auxiliary functions - who decides?
And finally, (7) will exemptions be granted for classes of sets - such
as those fitting items 1 thru 6 above? Inquiring minds want to know!
