I have had that too, often you either do not have it would quite right or
the brass will develop a very definitive smoothness.  What I have done many
times is to unwind one end of the string--the part that goes around the
brass tuner about three or four times and I will wind very tightly several
layers of medical tape (white type).  This increases the friction, you
rewind the cord tightly and it will work every and all times.
