All: I wonder if the real issue is switching the mode switch in general, vs.
current through the 120 VAC relay? Seems like the relay current would be
trivial, but the switching transients in the other sections of the switch
would be a real problem. Comments?

Some time back I was advised not to use the 110VAC on the mode switch to
activate a T/R relay.
How should one do it? I could make an adapter that used the switched
110VAC at low current through an optical isolator to activate the relay.
Would that be better than using the mode switch directly?
Replacing the switch is not a desirable thing to have to do.
