Hi Mike,

The band switching in the 8640 effects the actual RF band filers, 
dividers, and the FM deviation as I rember.  

When I purchased my 8640 it had that problem, and another rather 
common problem of the little gold fingers on the clear plastic wafer 
switches, driven by those same gears,  having dropped off.

Look for cracks in the nylon gears and that none of the fingers are 
missing.

I got an assembly on ebay to fix mine.  Been very carefull about not 
wrenching the bandswitch knob too briskly.
