Hi David,
The PTO had been modified before I got it, the trimmer capacitor had been
replaced with a physically larger one and the cover for it was missing. It
worked but was way out of calibration. I don't know if any turns had been
removed or not. In a fit of stupidity, I replaced all the match stick caps with
ceramic NPO's which of course stopped the pto from working alltogether. I took
it out of the radio a year ago with the intentions of figuring out where I went
wrong and to try to iron out the previous tinkerers mods when I found a
replacement pto and some other choice parts (I believe it was on this forum)
for sale. I recently acquired these parts and am now going to attempt to
complete the radio. In the interest of time (being that I'm self employed and
time is money) I think transplanting the 70E15 may be a more efficient way of
handling this issue. I will of course make any mods reversible and keep the old
pto to restore in the future. (or for posterity to do so) I am assumi
ng (a dangerous activity) that the rest of the radio is still working, it's been close to 10
years since I powered it up. I did replace all the paper caps and electrolytics
way back when, they should still be OK. I'll keep you posted on progress with
this baby. I actually didn't know that it was a J2 until a year ago because the
J2 is not on the front panel. J2 appears on the ID tag on the rear apron.
Strangeley the space for the serial number is blank. Could this be the holy
grail??? 73's Ross
