Thanks for the replies.  I decided to give Thunderbird a try, and set
it up. However, it isn't a stand alone app like gmail, and I would
need to provide a POP and SMTP accounts or use gmail, so used gmail.
I made an entirely new gmail account for Thunderbird, and also
discovered that I had to enable POP before Thunderbird would work.
It's running now, and I'll have am radio and hamcomputers reflectors
use that account.

I think Thunderbird has many more bells and whistles than plain gmail,
useful if you get and save many emails from different sources.  I'll
know more as I start to use it.
