One thing about discussions like this is that you get information
from many different users that can inform you of a piece of
equipment's long points and its shortfalls. If you can (or want)
to make only one purchase, this kind of information will help
someone decided if they want to do the work that may be required to
bring back the original operational characteristics of a radio.
It also will reveal things that cannot be changed. For example (I
am not berating this radio but found out) the SX 100 is subject to
warbling in the CW/SSB mode on higher bands. I found that was
because of stability of the chassis, and I saw the same thing in
other later versions, so I don't buy them. That is my experience,
but the radio was sensitive and did a good job otherwise.
One thing I hate is working on VFO stability problems. They are
hard to remove and it is difficult to find temperature compensating
capacitors. So I stay with radios that have proven themselves to be
consistent in that area. Other people like that type of challenge.
So any information I get via these exchanges help me decide what I
want to get and what to expect when I get it. That does not mean
that I think all Hammarlund receivers are junk, just a different
challenge. Best be informed and you are right, one man's junk is
another man's treasure.
