[Boatanchors] Winding coils

OK, so I am losing my memory - please forgive me.

Within the past few months I remember reading about using some notched 
plasic rods which were attached to a cardboard tube and then wire was 
wrapped through the notches.  After the coil was wound the tube was removed 
and you had an almost B&W like coil at a fraction of the cost.

Anybody else remeber this and able to point me in the right direction?
