Whenever I replace a rectifier tube with silicon
diodes, I change the filter circuit from capacitor
input to choke input by reconnecting the first
electrolytic capacitor to the "downstream" side of the
filter choke or resistor. This lowers the B+ somewhat
and improves regulation as well.

If the audio output plate is directly connected to the
rectifier cathode, though, this won't work.
