Could be a very good choice. 

What kind of dirt/filth/bad_stuff do you need to remove?

What are you planning to use as a solvent? Water plus detergent? 
Something else? 

If water, then you'll want to do a distilled water rinse afterward.
If some other solvent, then you'll need to re-lube everything where 
the solvent has removed lubricant.
