Ian,
I have 2 RAL's and a RAK (the LF receiver). They all work fine, but
the bandswitch doesn't have that positive "clunk" either on either of
them.
I didn't look into the switch mechanisms to see whether it's normal,
since it's the same feeling with all of them, I assumed they're made
this way.
It's time though to spray the switches as they're a bit noisy and
sometimes I have to wiggle them a little to make good contact.
I usually use the long thin nozzle which I can stick into small holes
and spray in the general direction of the part, if the part - or wafer
in this case is not directly accessible. I don't remember whether
there are any holes over or around the inaccessible switch sections in
these receivers...
