Man... if you are getting soap and water into your IF cans..you are doing
your cleaning all wrong !
This has nothing to do with the cleaning agent.. and everything to do with
the technique (s) used.
Anyway...
Bad Mica wafer caps built into the bottom of IF Cans seem to plague some
radios - it's really common in HQ -110 Hammarlund Recievers.
Fellow brought me a completely mint one he had used as a youngster.. then
stored away in the original box for 35 years.
Dead as a door nail... and yup... IF can found to be NFG.
But WAIT... there's no reason to " find a replacement " IF can. None.
The value of the mica caps that resonate the IF cans.. is right on the
schematic.
Try to find the caps physically and you can't
As we said, they are inside the bottom of the IF can.. alternate layers of
silvered mica.. with nothing to keep moisture and dirt out.
If you are up to a little micro-surgery... remove the IF can.. remove the
mica wafers.. put the IF can back together.
and then Solder Dipped Mica Capacitors right to the bottom of the IF can.
Re-align the radio.. and Bob's Your Uncle ( at least thats what your momma
said).
A sleazy repairman would do this without removing the wafers.. but that is
bad radio karma..
