   Olaf,

I keep a Grundig YB-400 (Yacht Boy 400) on the bench as it i for checking oscillators, signal quality, etc. But it is a g small shortwave radio covering LW plus 540 Khz. to 30 Mhz, FM
broadcas tuni reception. an external ante with an AC adapter
I imagine that Grundig/Eton still sells a current version of this ( check Universal Radio) and the units show up used all of the time on
   ebay.<
A big step up and one of my favorite reasonably modern receivers is t he Drake SPR-4 but these can get pretty pricey in a hurry depending
   upon wh

   The old Radio Shack DX-30
There are a lot of options o your grandson. My daughter (now n with my many vintage receivers and she ha SPR-4. A high point of her Saturday morni turn on my Johnson Desk KW.
