[Boatanchors] SWL/Novice Radio,any suggestions?

The Kaito/Degen 1103 fills all of your requirements. Excellent gen. coverage SW receiver for the money. 

I've used mine as a receiver in SSB QSO's. Has a BFO & 2 stages of selectivity & digital readout. AM BC band & FM to boot. Whip antenna is adequate for casual ham band listening.  

Best bang for the buck by far at about $75.
