[Boatanchors] SWL/Novice Radio,any suggestions?

It doesn't meet all of your requirements (no SWBC), but if my own  
grandson were 9 (he still has a few years to go), my choice of a radio  
to give him would be a Drake 2-A/B.  Small, lightweight, easy to use,  
good radio, and not overpriced.
