You should have immediately informed them that they should get new receivers
and learn how to use them. I have never heard of this +- 3 KHz stuff. If you
were on upper side band most all of the transmit energy would be above the
carrier frequency and little of any significance below it. Of course it may
seem like you have energy below your carrier frequency when tuning down in
the upper side band position but the pass band is actually offset 3 KHz
higher in frequency. Little did they know.

A group of us used to operate on 3999 lower side band regularly many years
ago. Sometimes even on 4000 lower side band.
