Similarly, I had an old Spotmaster tape cartridge player, used in
a broadcast operation, which developed an intermittent cueing problem. 

Finally, I had to go into the unit and found a lead of one of the 
transistors
on the cue amplifier had never been soldered.  Not a bad joint, but never
soldered.  It had worked for years on just the contact pressure of the
transistor's lead against the edge of the PC board conductor.
