Ive had good results by gluing polystyrene strips to a plastic bottle filled 
with fine sand. Groove as necessary and wind the wire and then epoxy the 
wire at the grooves. Cut and peel the bottle away. As long as you keep good 
tension on the wire it comes out very presentable. I use 2 vises and a small 
turnbuckle and have built TX and antenna loading coils up to 8" in diameter.
