I don't know if you have looked at an AR-3 recently.
However, to use a different type of speaker other than
a PM with a pretty small magnet just isn't possible.
The chassis is "notched" for the speaker and the
magnet assembly sits right on top of the chassis. The
top edge of the speaker clears the underside of the
cabinet by only about 1/4th inch. There just is not
room for the coil used in the electro-dynamic type of
speaker.
Also, the AR-3 does not use any filter choke.
Instead, there is a 2.7 K resistor in series between
the filter capacitors. To use such a speaker would
require a rewiring of the power supply and a change in
the manual to reflect this even if the speaker would
"fit".
Anyway, Heath did not use anything but a PM speaker in
the AR-3. To "speculate" as to what they "might have
done" is fine. However, at least in the case of the
AR-3 to use anything but the speaker that it was
designed to use would require a major modification to
the chassis and that would definitely cost more than
what they "might" have saved by using a surplus
speaker.
By the way, I have only two vices: Wild women and old
radios. Unfortunately, my wife (of 42 years) won't
let me bring home any wild women. Therefore, I am
"stuck" with old radios!

All the AR series used PM speakers but it wouldnt be
out of the question for them to substitute a cheaper
version in a run or two. Im not saying they did, just
a possibility. After all they were even more cost
conscious than Hallicrafters. But not as bad as Madman
Muntz.
