The primary difference is the cabinet and meter. The
Globe Chief 90 had a "flat front" cabinet and the
Globe Chief 90A had an "overhang" on the top. The 90
had the old black metal "moving vane" type of meter
and the 90A generally had a plastic housed meter.
However, it was still "moving vane".

Some of the earlier 90A units also had the black metal
meters. Also, there were 2 different front panels
used on the 90A. The earlier versions had a dark gray
painted panel with a VERY dark green (almost black)
painted area at the bottom of the panel. The later
versions had a light green pattern painted on both
sides of the meter as well as the other front panel
colors. The 90 front panel was exactly the same as
the early 90A except that it had "Model 90" under the
"WRL Globe Chief" logo whereas the 90A had "Model 90A"
under the logo. Go to

for some photos of my present, late model, Globe Chief
90A. My original 90A (from 1959) had both the early
front panel and the metal meter.

As far as the circuitry is concerned the 90 and 90A
transmitters are virtually identical.

I had the "remains" of a 90 transmitter that I parted
out quite a number of years ago.

ok here is a question: i bought my globe chief 90a
kit in 1957. it is like the old man and the hammer,
"best hammer i ever bought, has had three new handles
and one new hammer end"

so, what is the difference between the gl90 and the
gl90a?
