John are you referring to what is called Tinnerman nuts or Clip Nuts?
They are a flat piece of metal folded in half with a threaded hole on
one half and a larger hole on the other. The open end slips over the
edge of something and you install a sheet metal screw to fasten the
parts.
If that is the case, aircraft supply places have them in all sizes from
number 4 to number 10. I have also seen them at larger hardware stores.
If you don't have any luck with normal places try Aircraft Spruce and
Specialty to see if they have what you need.

At these places they can be quite expensive, but at least it is a
source.
