Actually, the R-388 wasn't a hacked up design (and it isn't a 51J-4).  The 
51J was "proper" only if you wanted to use it with a Lo-Z source.  It was built 
to sell to well healed civilians who couldn't imagine any antenna other than a 
coax center fed dipole.  The R-388 wasn't.  There is nothing improper about 
designing a radio to work as intended.  The input of the R-388 is proper 
because that's what it's only customer wanted, needed, ordered, and most importantly 
to Collins Radio paid for.  It was built to use in the later model 
AN/GRC-26's, not in some high-end suburban neighborhood.  And it works just fine with 
the end fed wire mine is tied to.
