Johnson had a kit to add the keyer circuit to the
earlier models. Your transmitter may be one of those
that the kit was added.

I'm restoring another RANGER I and I've come across
something that begs me to ask if there were more than
two versions of this rig. The first one I restored
was a "later" version and wired exactly like the
schematic.
I have the schematic for the "early" model (without
6AL5 and 12AU7 keyer) and fixed modulator bias. The
power trannie for the early model does NOT have
windings for a bias rectifier.
The schematic for the later model of course shows the
6AL5 bias rectifier and 12AU7 keyer. Modulator bias is
taken directly from 1/2 of the 6AL5 bias rectifier.
The power trannie has the bias windings.
Now to this rig............... It has the early power
trannie without bias windings and the modulator bias
is wired as shown in the "early" schematic. It also
has the 6AL5 and 12AU7 keyer deck. The keyer is wired
as shown in the "later" version but the 6AL5 is only
used to provide voltage to the keyer. Voltage for the
cathodes of the 6AL5 is being picked off the plate
winding of the 6AX5 and dropped through resistors to
achieve the correct voltage for the circuit.
So this rig looks like a later version but has the
"early" transformer and a bias rectifier circuit
unlike the "later" schematic.
