One thing that can be done to help eliminate chirp is
the same as Heath did with the DX-100 and DX-100B in
one of their modification kits.  That is to let the
VFO run continuously when in transmit rather than
trying to key it.  Now that precludes any "break in"
operation but allowing the VFO to run while keying
later stages really does cut the "chirp" factor to
almost zero, if not zero.

The Heath modification kit was the same one that added
the "spotting" switch.
