Harry, ...Since your Ranger works fine with a crystal, I'm thinking you may 
have trouble with VFO low output voltage. I believe there is a 18K  resistor 
in the VFO compartment that can cause this problem. Check pin 6 on the 6AU6 
oscillator tube for +150 VDC.
