That's certainly part of it. Another part is that some ISPs drop their
connection after you've sent the message, but before the distant
end sends back a "200 message accepted for delivery" or equivalent.
If _your_ mailer (or your ISP's, if you don't run Sendmail) is
standards-compliant, it doesn't decide that the mail has been
delivered until it sees the "200", and so will resend. I see rather
more of this than I'm happy about, as my day job is running the
mailers for a very large state government agency.
A little more directly on-topic: My word! 20 meters has been hopping
the past two mornings, with lots of DX to Asia. Two mornings in a row
I've heard a guy make _ONE_ call and get someone in Japan. Makes me
wish I had a lower noise floor in my mobile station. Also makes me
wish I could retire again, put my mast up, get a tri-bander on it, and
run 1500W PEP. *sigh*
