I got a Ten-Tec Jupiter with the intention of exploring the "modern" radio world. Very nice little package, seems to work every time I turn it on - something I am not used to experiencing.
Strange box though, it wants to do my keying for me on CW and select the mode for me in each band.
Fortunately, I have found its real value as instrumentation for my BA collection work. With the variable power output , 150 Cy digital filter, spectrum scan and digital read out, it is a really useful piece of test equipment for aligning and testing BA gear.
I have used it for QSOs occasionally but it doesn't have the fun of an HRO-50 and Viking II.
I just downloaded the latest software configuration from the mother ship in TN and found that the Jupiter now has an AM transmit mode - 25 watts carrier limit - a step forward but I am not sure that is meaningful in today's world.
So there is really a place for rice boxes, even if they are made in Tennessee - maybe they are Gritsboxes (Grits being a similar dietary staple here in the South.)

Hello
I have a lot of 1/2 watt old carbon resistors. Some of them has 4 color bands
and some has 5 color bands. I know the 4th color band is the tolerence.
what does the 5th one represent? I have an old tube radio made in 1960s. It uses
4 band carbon resistors. What year did the 5 band ones introduced?

That's the "TOLERANCE" band.

I forgot to mention, there's resistors with 6 bands also.

Normally the color code is first band is first digit, 2nd band is second
digit, third band is the multiplier, fourth band is tolerance, additional
bands can be quality and/or tempcoefficient.

Check the specs. A lot of the frequency counters built into multimeters are
only good for audio, but not all. The high priced spread usually count up
into the gigahertz region, which is more than you need.
It isn't at all tough to homebrew a frequency counter. A 60 MHz counter can
be built for under $15 in parts. Check the designs from OM3CPH, for
example. http://ham.kiev.ua/pic/new.html The so-called "Weeder Counter",
which used to be the homebrew standard
http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclict/weedfreq.htm, I think is now
available commercially for a decent price. Take a look at
http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr/lcdcnt.html -- no schematics there but you can see
how simple it can be.
If you are up for a kit that costs a few bucks, the M-Cubed Frequency
Counter/Power Meter is really nice ... counts up to UHF and will do
hundreths of a Hz at audio. http://www.m3electronix.com/fpm1.html

Good point, Rodger. In fact, more often than the counter I use the main
rig, a digital readout rice box with general coverage. Usually the
sensitivity is good enough that just laying a wire somewhere near the
circuit in question is all it takes to be heard on the station receiver.

To keep it "boatanchors" a nice properly calibrated R-390 will
give you less than 1Khz of accuracy on readout.

Hi John,
I started using this "trick" when I was trying to get an SX-25 back in
alignment; when I received it one band had the HFO tracking on the wrong
side so it was WAY off. I loaded the proper top and bottom frequencies
into memories of the YB-400 and this made the "back and forth" setting a
lot faster. You are right that there is enough signal radiated that it
is easy to pick up and often the harmonics are also strong enough to use
so that receivers that have the European low frequency range can be used
to pick up the harmonics of a 50 Khz. BFO. I did this while restoring a
Drake 1A a couple of months ago to set the BFO.
Most of the modern little shortwaves are PLL synthesized and the
readouts are quite accurate (especially for BA use). On the YB-400 I
put it in SSB mode and then calibrate the BFO for zero beat when tuned
to one of the WWV frequencies which will give you good measurement
accuracy. When I need better accuracy I run my HP-5245L off of the
unleveled counter output.

I was working of a frequency drift problem on a WS 19 and used a Sony
ICF-2010 in CW mode to tune in the LO then went around tapping things and
with a heat gun and freeze spray. It was easy to hear when the suspect part
was tickled as the beat note changed.
