The DX-100 and DX-100B require a modification kit to
use the SB-10. The DX-100 requires drilling of holes
in the rear of the chassis to install two SO-239
connectors for the SB-10 interface. The DX-100B
already has these holes.
In addition Heath recommended pulling the tubes used
in the AM modulator of the DX-100 series if SSB
operation was used to any extent. This was to reduce
the load on the power supply.
Now the VFO stability in the DX-100 series is VERY
marginal for SSB. I installed the SB-10 modifications
in my original DX-100 back in 1966 and found that the
VFO just wasn't stable enough. So, I modified my MT-1
Cheyenne mobile which has basically the VFO from the
Apache and that worked very well even though the MT-1
has a single 6146 in the final instead of the two 6146
tubes in the Apache and DX-100 series.
For its day (late 1950s early 1960s) the SB-10 phasing
SSB exciter was a viable way of getting on SSB at a
reasonable cost.
As for the power: You will get the same power from
the DX-100 as with the Apache.

Is this unit a plug in for a DX-100, or would I need
to fudge it in? Would I get full output with one of
these? Are they practical besides the fact that they
turn AM into Donald Duck sound?
