[Boatanchors] Giant Magic Eye Tubes

I just caught a little of the 1951 Sci-Fi flick  "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and in a scene where the alien goes back into the spaceship he makes some gestures at a console with a large video display and turns it on. On either side of the display there are giant magic eye's that are closing and opening as to indicate a signal strength. These are obviously mechanical "special effects" but I thought it interesting that the writers figured that these highly advanced folks would use a magic eye tube in their flying saucer....
