[Boatanchors] Wrinkle paint

Hi john,
I have had good to excellent results recreating the Collins St James finish
using Rustoleum Textured finish which is available in several colors at
Lowes. It produces a fine texture. I start with black. I then use two to
three very light coats of St. James Gray ending up with a very close look
and feel to the original.
For older cabinets such as the Bud cabinet type finish that have more of a
wrinkle finish, Krylon makes a product called Textured Elegance which I
found in a light tan at an art supply store. It too took the acrylic St.
James overspray nicely and was a much more aggressive look but still very
nice. Any color acrylic enamel overspray should work.
PlastiKote makes a wrinkle finish product which I have found in black and is
usually used for engine finishing. I have found it difficult to use but it
could have been factors I didn't recognize that caused my dissatisfaction.
As with any refinishing, a clean and smooth finish is mandatory. Don't
expect results you will like if the base is not nearly perfect. Strip to
bare metal using Peel Away 7 available at Home Depot, clean it with
denatured alcohol and then prime with Rustoleum primer also available at
Lowes. Peel Away 7 is odorless, and while it takes awhile to get the job
done is safe, creates very little mess and really does the job. Always
practice paint application on something else first to be sure no unusual
reaction will occur between paints which has happened to me more than once!
Good luck with your project.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Wrinkle paint
It appears that the HQ 129 X had a paint finish very
similar to the Collins St. James Gray.
Is it possible to duplicate such a finish? What type
paint would be used? Would an oven be required to make
the paint achieve that texture? The color formula can
be determined and mised via using a computer at a
paint store, but just how to get it ti achieve that
texture is not clear to me.
I am sure that only a certain paint composition could
be caused to wrinkle or achieve that texture in an
oven.
Would someone with knowledge and experience please
educate me. Thanks and 73, John, K5PGW
