GA to the list..........

To add to this discussion, WECO (Western Electric Company) had a tube
in their inventory labeled as a 253A. A mercury rectifier, S-17 bulb
with cap on a bi-pin base.  Oxide filament.  Rated at 2.5v @ 3.0a;
3.5kv PIV; 250ma out. The variant listed for this tube is a 280A.
WECO also had a 280A in their inventory. It's listed as a mercury
rectifier, a 253A on a UX base.

So the 2.5v filament exists, and in the form of a 280A.

For anyone who worked for the Bell System, you will recall that WECO
used a numbering scheme far different than that of some individual
manufacturers and outside the RMA/EIA registration process.

A bit more history.....................

I am not selling anything, but pertinent to the current discussion, the
link below will take you to an auction site sale of a JRC "JX 280"
rectifier tube with the original box. There is enough resolution in
the
pictures to read the text on the box, which lists the filament as 5.0V,
2.0A.

I believe the "JX" reference is a a manufacturer's designation, as I
find references to "CX-280";"SX-280", and UX-280", all full wave
rectifiers. NJ7P's tube database (http://www.nj7p.org/Tube.php) shows
a
pinout but no parameters for type "280" but shows 5V, 2A filament specs
for type "UX-280" and refers to type 5Y3 for other characteristics.
