If it be oil you must have, I would suggest the use of a synthetic type such 
as Mobil 1 or  Amsoil.  It won't lubricate any differently from conventional 
oil, but it doesn't gum up the way regular oil does.

For a really light coating, I dilute the oil to about 30%-50% with mineral 
spirits.  The solvent evaporates, leaving behind a light film.  Perfect for 
bicycle chains, does not collect dirt.
