Dick,

Much of the packing stuff in the microphone housing is to keep
vibration, feedback and thump noise out of the microphone.

You do need to keep the element isolated from the case.
How much is not a lot. Your case may have an abundance and you 
can trim some out. Different stuffing has different properties.

Also depends on where you use the mike. 
On a table in a quite room and no speaker is a lot
different from on stage with a few hundred watts of amp and speakers around 
you.
