I have an old Turner 454X SSB crystal mic the had a bad element and
purchased one of Mouser's ceramic elements which by the way fits great, has
great sensitivity and response.

Only problem is that the depth of the new cartridge is greater than the old
crystal one so I must remove some the content of the element cover to get
the screws back into it. The element cover has the outer screen, a cloth
piece, another metal screen, a fiber washer, another screen made of brown
fiber material with larger holes than the other screens, and finally another
fiber washer.

Is this just alot of overkill or are all these parts in the element cover
essential to the performance of the mic?
