[Boatanchors] Weird service problem

Not exactly a boat anchor, but it's weird enough that I've got to
discuss it with somebody.  A friend bought a second hand Chrysler
car radio to put in his vehicle.  We tested it on the bench and
found it to work.  And figured out the connections to the connector
that plugs into the back.  But in the vehicle it wouldn't work.
I was plugging the connector on and off and got it a little cockeyed
and the radio started working.  Turns out that if you apply power with
the speakers connected the radio won't work; but if you apply power
and then connect the speakers it will work.  So for now he's going to
put a toggle switch in series with the speakers - but this is about the
weirdest thing I've ever encountered.  Does anybody know why it is
this way?
