I think you meant to say you were measuring ohms and forgot to  switch to 
line voltage. :-) Unfortunately, this is a common problem. It is also  common 
when using a Wheatstone Bridge to measure the change in resistance of a  copper 
coil (such as a power transformer) to determine it's temperature. In this  
case, it is necessary to make the switch quickly, so the wire won't cool down  
while you're twiddling knobs. Sad to say this is so common an error we carry an  
extra resistor or two for our bridge. They aren't cheap either.
 
So don't feel bad, you have a lot of company. And those 260's are a real  
workhorse. The newer ones have micro fuzes in them to prevent damaging the meter  
movement.
