Fellows,

There is a table in an old ARRL handbook giving the spacings and proper
gauge
solid conductors for the difference spacings.
Back in April 1938 when I got my ticket, with limited pocketbook, I salvaged
solid
copper wire gauge 18 from primaries of discarded auto spark coils. I
whittled
spacers out of "fat pine" also known as "heart pine" and is almost hard as a
rock, seemingly pure resin (pronounced rosin). They were absolutely water
proof!
I picked the spacing from table in the handbook for the wire size to give
600 ohm
line.
FWIW
