[Boatanchors] Yet another tube question

Remember that the original manufacturer never
furnished matched pairs with the equipment and it
worked very well when new. This includes Motorola
with their FM equipment that used push-pull 2E26 and
6146 tubes in some of the low band and high band
transmitters.
Also, most tubes age at a different rate and after a
while the tubes are no longer matched even if they
were at the start.
If you start with new tubes you really don't need to
"match" them. What "matching" usually does is to
increase the profit margin of the supplier.
The only exception is with transmitters that use sweep
tubes. When the equipment was originally manufactured
every television set used a sweep tube in the
horizontal output and the quality of manufacture of
these tubes was excellent. Unfortunately, today the
quality of the newly manufactured sweep tubes is all
over the place and matching can help in some cases.
But, with transmitting tubes the quality of
manufacture is generally much better and you don't
need to get them "matched".

Next question is Would there be any advantage to using
a matched pair for VHF? When you consider the price
difference, I could save some money, but I also want
to get the best performance from the rigs.
