Mark, W1EOF, in the "Time for eBay thread" was wondering about other things going on.
Well, at the moment, I am re-building a 1950's R-138 rcvr. It is an 11 tube ac/dc super-het. But like most everyone else, I have other fun projects on the 'round-to-it' list too. But this will be my priority for a while.
The R-138 receivers were the aftermath of a terminated contract (800 rcvrs.) with the US Coast Guard by the Dooley Co. who in turn sold the parts to Boulevard Electronics in Chicago and they in turn sold the receivers mostly as kits. Mine was a wiring rats nest, resistors/capacitors/wires tacked/spliced together in mid air...most coils, padder caps & tube sockets installed different from directions...just a general mess. I decided to un-build it then to re-build per the instructions using newer parts. N0TE, Wayne, has been a great help and has furnished me with the documentation plus he also has a R-138 and has answered my questions about parts orientation. I am down to a bare chassis now and the next thing on the agenda is to clean the dirty chassis, desolder var. caps, bandswitch, paint the xformers, etc. I'm looking forward to reversing the process and putting it back together.
Happy soldering to all...73, Bill K4JYS
