Oops- I can see how my post may have caused confusion. 6BH6 is the clear
winner (thanks for checking guys). 6AU6 had been mentioned as a possibilty.
My very brief research showed it to be a somewhat similar tube and I just
tried it out of curiosity.
On a totally unrelated note- A previous owner also replaced the main tuning
and bandspread knobs on this HQ-140-XA with BC-348 knobs. I won't bother
trying to find originals. They work great. Most of the black krinkle paint
was gone, so I decided to try to improve them. As much as I cringe at trying
to paint anything, I remembered seeing "wrinkle finish" black paint
somewhere. I found it at Auto Zone I think; Krylon 3370 Black Wrinkle. After
removing the remaining paint with a little wire brush Dremel tool, I
followed the instructions and it actually worked! The knobs are nice shiny
black krinkle again. So if you want to spruce up those BC-348s as a winter
project, have at it..
