PS: Maxim's father, in England, also a prolific inventor.. built and flew
(for a very short time) a steam-powered airplane several years before the
Wrights... it had a gasoline-fuled boiler and light-wieght engines with
hollow connecting rods, all designed by Maxim. It 'launched' from a rail
track of about 1 mile in length. It was not successful, due mainly to a
lack of understanding of aerodynamic drag vs. lift. It had stacks of
arrays of plane surfaces, and looked like a huge kite. Refs and cites if
anyone is interested.
